My technology story January 20, 2009

For the Digifolios session, I am supposed to be telling you my technology story, how I got started using technology.  So here it is!

Several years ago my boss asked me if the ESL instructors were using any technology in classes other than the software in the computer lab.  I was embarrassed to have to tell him that we weren’t.  At the time — probably 2003 — I wasn’t even aware of what technology existed to be used.  So I began investigating.

My first tool was the online classroom Nicenet.  The college where I was teaching did not use any kind of course management system at the time, so Nicenet was a real find.  My students posted their assignments, had discussions, commented on each others’ work.  They were not very computer savvy then, but they felt very comfortable on Nicenet. We used it for probably two years, until the college began using Moodle.

Then came the 2005 EVO sessions.  I did the one on blogging.  That was one of the scariest but also most life-altering educational experiences I have had.  I fell in love with blogging and have been at it now for nearly four years.

Of course, with all the talk about blogging with students, I was determined that my students were going to blog.  My early attempts were far from successful.  I couldn’t figure out how to use blogs other than just someplace to post writing assignments.  Eventually, though, I did.  Darren Kuropatwa was the inspiration for me there.

After that, I discovered WebQuests — also thanks to an EVO session.  I developed a number of different WebQuests that I have used with my students.  These have been a lot of fun to develop, and my students have enjoyed completing them.

After many false starts, I finally persevered with a wiki until I figured out how to make them work.  Since then, I have incorporated wikis into my teaching and into my professional development.

But the more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn!  I don’t think I will ever know it all or even use all that I know about with my classes, but I really enjoy the process of trying out the different tools and adopting the ones that seem to work for me and my teaching style.

So even though this may look like the end of my technology story, it is really just the beginning!

The other EVO session I am doing is one on Digifolios.  That has been nice because I ran across an old friend from grad school there.  We started by forming ourselves into groups by birth order.  It was an interesting experience; I don’t usually pay much attention to stuff like that.  I have fallen behind already, though!  I am supposed to be telling the story of my initial use of learning technology.  That is easy; I know exactly when and where and why it happened.  The challenge will be to find a way to tell the story creatively.  Guess I should stop writing here and get to work!

One of the EVO sessions I am doing this year is Multiliteracies.  So far I like the approach — more independent investigation than “You are all going to do this.”

While much of this isn’t new to me, I find that I always learn a lot from these sessions.  The interaction with other professionals is, of course, a big part of it.  And there is still so much I have to learn!

It’s time again to sign up for the free EVO sessions of your choice. If you haven’t already, you might want to go to http://evosessions.pbwiki.com/Call_for_Participation09 to see what is available.  I am doing digifolios and multiliteracies.  Hope to see some of you there!

A new theme September 3, 2008

When I logged in here today, I saw a notice that there was a new theme available.  I decided to check it out.  It is called Albeo.  I looked at this blog on it and decided that I liked it.  It is definitely more colorful and less serious than what I had before.  I liked it, and I decided to activate it.  So if you actually come to my blog, you will see it.

The notice also said that WordPress hopes to add more themes soon.  I was glad to hear that.  When it happens, you can expect to see more changes in my clogs blogs.

(Thanks to Gabriela’s comment, I came here to look at this post and noticed that I was going to be making changes to my clogs, not my blogs.  I wear clogs and like to change them from time to time, but that wasn’t my intent here!)

Sorting out the blogs July 2, 2008

I have finally decided to move Random Thoughts from Blogger to WordPress.

Actually, I decided that I was ready to move all the Random Thoughts posts here because I had always thought I would combine the two blogs.  But I didn’t really want to so I kept putting it off.  Then a while back, I imported what I had in Blogger.  But still I kept posting to Random Thoughts there.

Last night I decided to make the move.  So I imported everything from the old site to this blog.

Then I realized that there was no reason to combine the blogs, really.  With the WordPress dashboard, it is easy to go from one blog to the other.  So I decided to open another blog here as the new home for Random Thoughts.

Then I had to go through all the posts here (more than 800) and try to filter out the Random Thoughts posts so I would be left with only posts that really belonged here.  I am not sure that I did it perfectly.  I may have deleted a few that I shouldn’t have.  But now, at least, this is basically a project blog — an EVO blog or one I could use for any other project.

I am pretty happy to have finally figured this all out.  I only wonder what took me so long!

I haven’t been here for a few weeks, and I hadn’t seen the new dashboard interface until today.  It told me right up front that I had 85 messages that had been marked as spam.  Two of them ended up not being spam, but that was a small price to pay not to have to go into the blog and read each of the 85 “comments” individually.

WordPress is so cool!

Why do I keep my other blog on Blogger?

Meme: Passion Quilt March 3, 2008

Alicia tagged me with the Passion Quilt meme. The rules are as follows:

1) Think about what you are passionate about teaching your students.
2) Post a picture from a source like FlickrCC or Flickr Creative Commons or make/take your own that captures what YOU are most passionate about for kids to learn about…and give your picture a short title.
3)Title your blog post “Meme: Passion Quilt” and link back to this blog entry.
4)Include links to 5 folks in your professional learning network or whom you follow on Twitter/Pownce.

So here is my picture, or actually, not my picture, but one by meyshanworld. It is entitled “World Connection in Blue”.

It is really important to me to help my students — kids and adults — understand that there is a bigger world out there. I want them to think about different ways of thinking and being. With the Internet, it is much easier to do that than it used to be. We can learn about the world from the comfort of our own homes and schools. We can connect to each other and learn from people who live in locales very much like or unlike our own. We can cross borders that separate us geographically and politically and reach a truer understanding of the world.

Now, the hard part for me with these memes is finding people to tag. Most people I might be tempted to tag have already been tagged by others. So, as usual, I ask you to consider yourself tagged and respond to this meme if you haven’t already done so.

The end of this year’s EVO session is in sight, with it officially ending tomorrow. It is always an interesting time for me. I am enthusiastic about incorporating new tools in my teaching, but there is always the challenge of actually doing something.

I know that I have learned a lot in this EVO session. I have learned about Drupal — well, a little bit at least. I have gotten more comfortable with Twitter and the 43 Trio. I have explored wikis a bit more and am more committed than ever to blogging.

I long for a community, a f2f community, that values these things, but that will have to wait. Maybe someday…

I am trying to figure out how to save the game board and upload it to the SMiELT site. Wish me luck!
